English Program Volunteer Coordinator

Description

The English Program Volunteer Coordinator will help us to build and manage our new program providing free English classes to women and children in the town of Teotitlán del Valle. The Coordinator will be responsible for recruiting, managing and training volunteer teachers, and working with the rest of the En Vía program to maximize the impact we can have in the town.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to make a big impact in a very new social change organization. There is room to grow professionally and personally in leadership, fundraising, recruitment and more, plus the opportunity to improve Spanish language skills within the rich cultural community of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Commitment to ending poverty, experience leading groups, and the flexibility to work in a start-up non-
profit are essential.

Major Responsibilities

1) Recruit and Manage Volunteer Teachers
Our classes are taught by a group of committed volunteers.
The Coordinator will be responsible for making sure we are providing the best English classes possible by
ensuring that we have an adequate number of teachers for our classes, and that they are prepared and
motivated for their classes

2) Create and Run Training Program
The Coordinator will plan and run trainings for volunteer teachers
before they begin teaching, as well as provide ongoing feedbackthroughout the program and at the end
of their term.

Minimum Requirements

  • College graduate
-Leadership experience: experience managing staff and/or volunteers
  • Excellent people skills: outgoing, friendly, warm, professional, ability and passion for building relationships with individuals from different backgrounds
  • Good judgment, strong initiative, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to be organized yet flexible, as conditions of transportation, supplies and volunteer services change weekly
  • Demonstrated commitment to social change
  • Experience living abroad
  • Basic Spanish

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Experience teaching English as a foreign language
  • • 2+ years in a full-time, professional leadership position
  • • Fluency in Spanish

Commitment

  • 20-25 hours/week, including 2pm to 7pm Tuesday and Thursday afternoons
  • Minimum 3-month commitment required, 5+ months preferred

Compensation

This is an unpaid volunteer position, and volunteers are responsible for their own travel and living costs.
We can help volunteers find housing in an affordable posada, apartment or with a host family. We can
also offer a discount on Spanish classes at the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca, the largest Spanish school in
Oaxaca.
