Teotitlán del Valle
Teotitlán del Valle: A historic Zapotec town whose name means “Land of the Gods.” Thought to be the first Zapotec settlement in the area, it was founded by those who descended from nearby Picacho mountain. Teotitlán is world-renowned for its weaving tradition, blending pre-Hispanic techniques with Spanish-introduced wool and looms to create vibrant tapetes (rugs). Most residents speak both Zapotec and Spanish. This is our largest community, with over 100 women in the program. Meet 12 of them here: talented artisans, shopkeepers, and entrepreneurs shaping their town.
