San Miguel del Valle

San Miguel del Valle is a Zapotec community where the majority still speak Zapotec, though their dialect is distinct from nearby towns. The town is especially known for its embroidery artists and the brightly colored, pleated dresses and aprons worn by the women, an iconic style unique to the community. While weaving became more common in the 1970s, leading to economic growth and the development of the town center, today En Vía works with a variety of women entrepreneurs, including weavers, seamstresses, food vendors, and shop owners. Meet 6 of the 22 talented women in this community.
